Copper Plating

Industrial Copper Plating

Common Application in the Oil & Gas Industry

Copper plating is electrolytic plating that deposits a layer of copper onto the substrate. This common application is used in the oil and gas industry to prevent galling during make-and-break operations. A copper coating may be applied to parts and components such as premium threaded connections, couplings, tubulars, risers, and alloy premium drill pipes for this purpose. Copper is also extremely useful as an undercoating for other plated metals to enhance rust resistance in high-corrosion environments.

Standard in the Electronics Manufacturing Industry

Copper occurs naturally as an uncompounded material and is one of very few metals in this category. In its purest form, copper is a very ductile and soft metal that exhibits a high thermal and electrical conductivity, only surpassed by silver. Because of these conductive qualities copper plating has been a long time standard in the electronics manufacturing industry, but because of its low cost few metals can match copper for efficiency in transferring electrical impulses.

Copper Plating Services

The finish that copper plating provides is usually reddish in color and can be deposited matte to very bright. It performs well in applications that require good corrosion resistance, but has the tendency to easily tarnish so it is not generally used as an underplating. Instead copper is used to enhance adhesion of deposits, because copper can be applied to substrates such as zinc die-casts which other metals have trouble adhering to.

- Good solderability

- Excellent conductivity

- Good corrosion resistance when used as an undercoat

- Throws very well

Advantages that Copper Lends

When using copper as an underplating it increases the overall electrical properties, and improves the corrosion resistance of the overall deposit. It is also used to fill surface imperfections in base metals, which results in smooth, level surfaces that readily accept soldering or coverage with other coatings or platings.

The high plating efficiency, uniform coverage and good throwing power of this material yield consistent component quality with a minimum of production challenges.
