Electro-Polishing

An abrasion-free finish with superior properties
Electro-Polished Parts

By replacing physical polishing with an electrochemical finishing process, the electro-plating experts at Electro-Coatings improve both the physical appearance and the corrosion resistant performance of stainless steel, aluminum and bronze.

The electro-polishing process is a mirror image of traditional electroplating. While the same type of process is used (anode/cathode electrical charge within a chemical bath) the effect is reversed. Rather than leaving a metallic deposit, electro-polishing removes microscopic metallic impurities and surface inconsistencies from a metal component's surface.

Electro-polishing offers component manufacturers a broad range of benefits:

  • Improved physical appearance: a uniform, high luster and excellent light reflectivity, without the directional lines created by abrasive polishing.
  • Adherence to tight tolerances: the film deposited by electro-polishing is microscopically thin, making the amount of metal removed controllable within .0001" to .0025"
  • Superior mechanical properties: electro-polishing reduces friction, surface drag, galling, fouling, plugging and scaling. The process doesn't cause hydrogen embrittlement, and offers higher resistance to aqueous corrosion
  • Natural passivation: by removing elemental iron and imparting a monomolecular oxide film, a component absorbs oxygen rather than hydrogen and maintains its chemical stability in a wider range of applications.

The craftsmen at Electro-Coatings are acknowledged industry leaders in the application of electro-polished finishes. Their expertise is strengthened by the latest in automated equipment for precise control of electro-polishing processes.
