What Are The Benefits of HVOF Wear Resistant Metal Coatings
The High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) coating application process increases the wear resistance of many types of Electro-Coatings protective coatings, while delivering extra bond strength for longer component life.
HVOF delivery involves a spray head that blends oxygen and a combustible fuel (kerosene, acetylene, propylene and hydrogen) to deliver a powdered friction-reducing coating material. The result is a jetlike effect that applies coatings at temperatures of 5-6000o F at velocities beyond 7000 feet per second.
The heat and spray pressure of HVOF allow the deposition of friction-reducing materials with high hardness characteristics, including tungsten carbide, chrome carbide, nickel alloys, cobalt alloys and various carbon and stainless steels.
Benefits of a stronger bond
A chief benefit of HVOF is an exceptionally high coefficient of adhesion, commonly exceeding bond strengths of 12,000 psi between coating and substrate. This allows HVOF coatings to maintain nearly 100% of their wear resistant qualities in high temperature environments, an especially useful attribute for components that must function in the absence of proper lubrication for extended periods of time.
Bond strength also opens opportunities for coating-based repair of components. The ability to build a smooth, dimensionally consistent coating to thicknesses up to 1/2" makes it possible to refurbish worn components. The resulting HVOF surface restores conformity to dimensional tolerances without additional machining.
